When you are faced with an important change that you either want or don’t want to make, it is one of the most emotional times in your life. Even if it is for the better, change can be frightening, especially if what lies beyond it is unknown and you don’t know what to expect.

Naturally, you’ll be in a high emotional state right around these times. You’re going to be more stressed or sad than usual, making this a prime time for emotional eating.

You could be in a bad or unhealthy relationship, for example. You know you want to end it, but part of you is afraid. There are many things to be concerned about, whether it is retaliation from the other party, ridicule among friends, or loneliness.

It’s all too easy to focus on the short-term negatives while ignoring the long-term positives. You’ll probably have a lot of emotional eating urges before this.

Another common source of stress and stressful situations is one’s job. You will undoubtedly be stressed if you have a job that you despise. The prospect of quitting your job is undoubtedly intimidating, as is the prospect of accepting a new job.

This is another situation in which you are likely to resort to emotional eating. The issue with emotional eating in these situations is that it involves you ignoring a major life decision that needs to be made simply because it makes you feel uncomfortable.

Of course, eating junk food is more comfortable, but it will not help you make the necessary decisions – or even carry out the transition from one thing to another after a decision has been made.

Certain things in our lives must be done, even if we despise doing them. These difficult choices are prime examples. Even if you know you want to leave your significant other, you may avoid doing so because it is unpleasant.

However, that is just the way life is, and eating will not change that. It has the potential to permanently harm your health. Even positive life changes, such as a move or marriage, can cause you to eat emotionally because, while these times are rooted in happiness, they are also a source of stress based on an unknown future.

The sooner you realize you can’t hide behind food, the better. It’s a bandage, a short-term fix for a long-term problem. You must be able to confront these issues directly if you hope to make a positive change for the better and protect your health for longevity.
